Campaign for the survival of macaw chicks in the wild

11/24/2017

The Tambopata Macaw Project started a new campaign today on Experiment called "Increasing survival of macaw chicks using foster macaw parents in the wild". Wild Scarlet Macaw populations are declining due to the illegal pet trade and habitat loss. Although Scarlet Macaws lay 2-4 eggs, macaw parents will only feed the 1st and 2nd chick, while the others starve to death. They will develop techniques to increase survival of these chicks by moving them into new nests with no chicks, or only 1 chick. Support their initiative by co-funding their campaign!

We are proudly supporting this research campaign, the Tambopata Macaw Project needs your help too! #macawmovie #Peru #conservation

In the Canberra Times

12/8/2016

Canberra world premiere for documentary film of Peru's grand parrots

Bird-blessed Canberra's best and brightest parrots are spectacular in the extreme. And yet even they pale a little by comparison with ANU biologist Dr George Olah's special subject, the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao).

Tuesday sees the world premiere screening, at the ANU, of his documentary film The Macaw Project about the hefty (weighing up to 1.3 kilograms and growing up to 90cms in length) and brilliantly coloured species. It is, no wonder, the national bird of Honduras, rather as the not-so-showy but quietly magnificent Gang-gang cockatoo is the faunal emblem of the ACT.
